RENAISSANCE SENIOR APARTMENTS
419 North St. Clair Street
Toledo, Ohio 43604

Background & History

Renaissance Senior Apartments is owned and operated by National Church Residences. Four Ohio Presbyterian churches organized National Church Residences (NCR) as a 501(C)(3) Ohio not-for-profit corporation in 1961. NCR is headquartered in Columbus. NCR’s mission is to provide active independence in quality housing and supportive services at affordable prices. This ministry is targeted toward modest-income older adults, persons with physical challenges and formerly homeless adults and families.

Today, NCR operates over 325 facilities across the United States and Puerto Rico. Through sound management and steady growth, NCR has become a respected national leader in the not-for-profit retirement housing industry. In Toledo, NCR also owns and operates Arlington by the lake, a 50-unit affordable housing community for modest-income seniors at 2101 Arlington Avenue.

NCR and Renaissance Senior Apartments serve the public without regard to religious affiliation. Additionally, NCR and Renaissance do not discriminate against any person because of race, color religion, sex, national origin, family status or handicap.

The opening of Renaissance Senior Apartments in August 1993 marked the successful completion of a concerted effort to protect the century old building that was once known as the Willard Hotel and once housed city offices. The $3.4 million restoration of the historic building into an apartment community preserved part of the Toledo heritage, while providing needed housing in the central city area. It also served as an important first step in preserving the adjoining historic Valentine Theater. The Renaissance building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Renaissance Senior Apartments has 54 independent living units. Residents have an average age of 70, an average annual income of $6,900. Approximately 80% of the residents are disabled and receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) support.
